SCROOMS How to Play: Catching, Collection, and Quests
Learn how tuning and catch-zone control work, then use catches for your Index, Chimes, equipment upgrades, and early quests.
To play SCROOMS, equip a musical instrument, tune it to attract a creature, and keep that creature in the catch zone until the progress bar fills. Catches then support three different goals: building your Index, earning Chimes, and moving through quests.
Understand what each catch gives you
The game joins a short music minigame to a longer collection adventure. A successful capture adds a Scroom to your collection. You can sell caught creatures to Julian for Chimes, then use that currency toward equipment. The Index gives you a separate reason to catch: discovering species in each area.
These goals overlap, but they are not identical. Catching a familiar creature can still help your spending budget, while finding an uncaught species changes what you know about an area. Before a long session, choose whether you need a purchase, a missing entry, or a quest objective; that choice gives the same catching loop a useful purpose.
Separate tuning from holding the creature
| Stage | What you do | What it contributes |
|---|---|---|
| Attract | Play an equipped instrument | Begin the encounter |
| Tune | Match the frequency display | Bring the creature into the catch stage |
| Catch | Keep the creature inside its zone | Fill progress and capture it |
| Progress | Choose selling, collection, or quest use | Give the catch a purpose |
Tuning happens before the creature commits to the catch. Faster Tune Speed shortens this stage. Once the catch zone appears, your attention moves to the creature's position: progress increases while it stays inside and drains when it leaves. Reaching a frequency and finishing a capture are therefore separate successes.
If a capture keeps slipping away, practice zone control instead of treating every failure as a tuning problem. The catching guide explains that distinction in more detail.
Use equipment and songs for different jobs
Your catching instrument affects the minigame. The Ocarina is a utility tool obtained through Halden's early quest; its songs interact with travel and exploration. You can keep improving your catching gear while also following the quest route that unlocks songs.
Start with Leo's free Wooden Lute, finish the sale and guitar tutorial, then decide between collection practice and the next quest. That order gives you a working catch tool and a clear introduction to progression. Explore from the Grove as your quests and equipment allow, using the quest overview to keep the next useful reward in view.
